Pocket Studio™️ - Make Something with What's In Your Pockets!™️
A downloadable zine and clipboard kit
Pocket Studio™ is an innovative rubber-band-powered clipboard! The Zine Edition Pocket Studio™ is the perfect size for all zines made from 8.5”x11” paper folded into eighths! Even this manual is a zine!
Made for the Zine Idea Generator 2.0 Jam!
Inspired by 3d-printed doodads and gifts from regional Burning Man events, I had to make my own! Pocket Studio™️ is an ode to Silicon Valley, startup culture, and absurd product manuals.
Along the way it also pokes a little fun at how the devices we've come to carry in our pockets are useful for so much... as long as you're not trying to, y'know, draw some art.
The origins of the Pocket Studio™️ came out of this necessity. Being let loose in New York City on foot by yourself sounds like fun, until you try to draw some artwork! Laptops and graphics tablets carried in big backpacks get heavy after a while. (Also, you start to feel like a target for pickpockets or other street thieves!)
As a result, I started working on Artist Cards -- small trading-card sized pieces of art. They're also known as Artist Trading Cards (ATC's) or Art Card Editions and Originals (ACEO's). It was a good idea... until I realized I was still stuck needing to find someplace with a table to sit down and work! Most clipboards are bulky and bigger than this size. So, I designed and made my own, using TinkerCAD and a 3D printer!
The kinds of zines I like to make are a little larger than Artist Cards. As a result, I had to adjust my original prototype to make one that fits and works with the zine manual. There are three sizes of Pocket Studio™️ (for now):
- Zines (4.25" x 2.75")
- Artist Cards (3.5" x 2.5")
- Business Cards (3.5" x 2")
The physical 3d-printed micro clipboard component itself (let alone the rubber band!) isn't something that I can offer through the tubes of the internet. Instead, I've provided the files you'll need to make your own:
- STL files for sending to a 3D printer (Approx. 23g / 7.6m of filament required, brim recommended)
- SVG files for sending to a laser cutter (1/8" thick material recommended.)
There's also a full-size template on the second page / other side of the zine. If you don't have access to these other devices, you can trace the templates and make your own clipboard by hand.
Rubber bands, art supplies, and awesome art skills not included.
Put it all together, and you have an on-the-go Pocket Studio™️!

Those shoes damn. They look amazing!
Thanks! I found those boots on that NYC adventure I mentioned, and one of my first reactions was "... I need to start taking commissions again." In a way, they started this whole chain of events!
They must be +5 Boots of Inspiration! 😆
